MSSM Yorkville has quickly emerged as a top-tier Japanese restaurant, offering an intimate and refined omakase experience under the guidance of Michelin-starred chef Masaki Saito. Located on the second floor of 154 Cumberland St in Toronto, it combines urban aesthetics with traditional Japanese elements, creating a welcoming yet sophisticated atmosphere.
Guests appreciate the 14-course Edomae-style omakase, which masterfully balances tradition and innovation. Diners rave about standout dishes like the melt-in-the-mouth toro (bluefin tuna belly) nigiri and the expertly torched sea bream appetizer, showcasing seasonal, high-quality ingredients. As Lilian Hu Nguyen noted, each bite is a revelation, expertly curated by highly skilled chefs.
The attentive service is another highlight, with chefs keen to explain the inspiration behind each dish, enhancing the overall experience. Many patrons have pointed out the meticulous attention to detail, from the exquisite sushi rice to intriguing wine and sake pairings. With music enhancing the ambiance, MSSM is not just a meal; it’s a memorable dining journey that keeps clients coming back for more. In my view, this modern gem is a must-visit for both sushi aficionados and newcomers alike.

We had a really lovely experience with phenomenal sushi for a reasonable price. Arrived promptly as the experience starts on time. We had a phenomenal sushi chef (Ken?) who was clearly very skilled in both his sushi cuts and the composition of the pieces. He also was helpful in educating us on certain aspects of the fish. The menu had many known pieces but also a couple of surprising pieces we never had before. Every single bite we had from beginning to end was good, and the meal was incredibly efficient, ending just under 90 minutes.

Located on the second floor of 154 Cumberland Street in Yorkville, MSSM offers an intimate and refined omakase experience at a price point of 98 per person. This establishment is the brainchild of Michelin-starred chef Masaki Saito, who envisioned MSSM as both a restaurant and a training ground for aspiring sushi chefs. Here, diners can witness the meticulous craftsmanship of chefs trained under Saito’s guidance, delivering a 14-course Edomae-style omakase that emphasizes both tradition and innovation. Upon entering MSSM, guests are greeted by a sleek, modern interior that blends urban aesthetics with traditional Japanese elements. The ambiance is lively yet intimate, with bar seating that allows diners to observe the chefs at work. The restaurant operates on a reservation-only basis, with bookings opening one week in advance. It’s worth noting that MSSM is a cashless establishment, so be prepared to pay by card. The 14-course menu is a curated journey through seasonal and high-quality ingredients. Standout dishes include the toro (bluefin tuna belly) nigiri, which melts in the mouth, and the torched sea bream appetizer that offers a delightful balance of flavors. The miso soup, infused with truffle and shiitake mushrooms, deviates from the traditional, presenting a richer, more complex profile. Desserts like the hojicha cheesecake or shiso sorbet provide a refreshing end to the meal. Service at MSSM is attentive and knowledgeable, with chefs engaging diners by explaining each course and the inspiration behind it. The staff ensures that plates are promptly cleared, and beverages are consistently refilled. The atmosphere is enhanced by a curated playlist, often featuring throwback R&B tunes, adding a modern twist to the dining experience. In summary, MSSM Yorkville offers a unique blend of traditional Japanese omakase with modern twists, all at an accessible price point. Whether you’re a sushi aficionado or new to the omakase experience, MSSM provides a memorable dining journey that showcases the artistry and passion behind each dish. If you need assistance with reservations or have further questions, feel free to ask!

Excellent Omekase option in Toronto. The chef was amazing. Attention to detail incredible. The rice was exquisite, and the preparation of all the dishes was artfully done. Each course came with a delightful explanation. The wine and sake pairings were exceptional.

I usually don’t leave reviews unless I’m truly impressed—but thanks to Chef H, I left with such a happy heart today. Unlike the more formal vibes of other omakase spots I’ve tried, this place felt modern and casually welcoming, which I personally loved. Chef H was incredibly kind, attentive, and answered every question with care—it made the whole experience even more enjoyable. To be honest, I’ve never felt the urge to revisit any omakase I’ve been to before... but this is the first time I’ve found myself wanting to come back. The fish was unbelievably fresh, and the sushi rice? Absolutely perfect. Shoutout to sever Yuri for the spot-on sake rec—paired so well with the sushi! & Chef H, you're the real MVP you made my bday thank you :)

AMAZING!!! Loved it so much. Had an amazing Valentine’s Day dinner date here. Our Chef was very knowledgeable, respectful and kind. Was attentive to all of our questions. Already made another reservation for next week to bring some more friends! The restaurant was really cute and had some great music. Thanks so much for the good vibes and spectacular food. Also, the sake flight was delicious.

Went for a quick birthday celebration and had a great time overall. The vibe was cool and laid-back, and the omakase was delicious — fresh, well-balanced, and beautifully presented. We paired it with Dassai 45, and the uni kiss and uni sushi were definite highlights. The chef was friendly and welcoming. They didn’t do anything special for the birthday, which was a little surprising, but the food and experience still made it a memorable night.

My wife and I came here to celebrate our first year anniversary, and were blown away by the quality of the sushi at this price point. The service staff was attentive, and Chef Tong with his decade of experience as a sushi and omakase chef taught us about the fish of each sushi being served. The atmosphere is more laid-back and modern than most traditional omakase restaurants, and yet the edomae-style sushi is authentic and uncompromised in quality. Highly recommend to any enthusiast of authentic Japanese cuisine! Having come from Asian countries where Japanese cuisine is more prevalent, my wife and I feel really lucky to be able to access this level of omakase in Toronto, without having to break the bank. Thank you Chef Tong for serving us with your skills today! PS. To the Korean waitress who served us today, we went to Hodou Kwaja in Koreatown to have walnut cake and pancake. Give it a try!
